Environmental Injustices, Sustainability Lessons, and Climate Hope from an Indigenous Bribri community in Talamanca, Costa Rica

SOBRE LA AUTORA ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sophia Lewis-Mussa

Sophia (They/She) is a recent graduate from UC Santa Cruz holding a B.A in Environmental Studies and a B.A in Anthropology. They have spent their undergraduate career pursuing socio-environmental research themes, interested in these intersections beyond the “how” of their impacts, but the “why” of them. Her love for la naturaleza has always been intrinsic, but profoundly expanded over time. As a student, researcher, and community member, they are dedicated to being a part of the movement towards a sustainable, equitable, mutualistic future (or a just transition, if you will).

This research comes out of a year-long labor of love following three weeks of fieldwork spent in Yorkin, Talamanca, Costa Rica. Growing up disconnected from rooted food and with a narrow framework of what counted as naturaleza | nature, Sophia’s experiences in Yorkin became strong social and ecological epiphanies for her career and research. This website aims to shed light on some of these epiphanies, and position Yorkin as the leader and guia | guide that it is. May its stories speak to you.

Sophia is based in the East bay area of California, and currently works in environmental education and localized food systems.
